Measurable goals are sometimes an enigma to me. I want to accomplish things that are a bit more nuanced and difficult to break down into clearly defined and measurable action steps.
You may remember that right before Christmas I decided to refocus my energy and simplify my monthly goals. It was time to hone in on the important things:
And it’s working.
In a world filled with achievements and successes measured by constant improvement of analytics or increase in financial gain, it is easy to become distracted by the numbers. We can lose sight of the things that are really important such as enjoyment, peace, love, encouragement, and other immeasurable successes.
How do we go about achieving our “goals” when the “goals” are difficult to measure? It is easy to measure my Pinterest following. It is right there in the analytics. It is easy to see how many people each of my Facebook posts “reach” – the numbers don’t lie. But how many hearts are changed? How many women have I encouraged? And personally speaking, where is my heart at with the Lord? These are far more difficult to measure.
Yet that doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t include those things in our goals, does it?
I want to delve deeper into my relationship with Christ.
I want to increase the intensity of my prayer life.
I want to love my husband with abandon.
I want to support and encourage my children with greater purpose.
The thing about goals, whether measurable by the world or measurable only in your heart is that it is important to be intentional about them. The thing about goals is that you must be intentional about them. Click To Tweet
According to Dictionary.com, the definition of intention is “
Let’s take the previous goals and break them down a bit.
Delve deeper into my relationship with Jesus Christ.
Exactly what does that look like? We need to break it down a bit in order to “determine mentally upon some action” in order to achieve the result I’m looking for.
- Keep up with my daily Bible study lessons.
- Choose to listen to positive Christian music when available.
- Finish reading 1000 gifts and begin a gratitude journal.
These are actionable, measurable steps that I can follow in order to achieve my immeasurable goal. 🙂
Increase the intensity of prayer life.
In order to increase the intensity in my prayer life, I would like to begin a more structured prayer life. Have you seen The War Room? It’s an excellent movie about a prayer warrior. I wrote about it here. There are excellent ideas in this movie about how to structure your prayer life by creating a prayer room, using post-it notes, journaling, truly the options are endless.
- Use my exercise time for prayer.
- Begin a prayer journal using colored pens and post-it notes to keep the journal creative and interesting.
Love Big Jon with abandon.
Without getting into too many details I will just say that I have discovered the best resource for us empty-nester / Christian women. Sheila, over at To Love, Honor, and Vacuum, is brilliant. Check her out.
Support and encourage the Warriors with greater purpose.
I need to think on this one a bit. Having adult children is fairly new to me and I admit that I have lots of learning to do in this area. Thus, I would like to take a month to pray, ponder and research what this one would look like. I would appreciate any and all suggestions in this area.
Also for March, I do have a few easily measurable goals to add.
Big K (my very favorite sister) has challenged me to do this. Y’all know how much I hate it, but the truth is I’m not getting any younger and I want to be around for my numerous grandchildren I intend on having :). “Exercise” can be simply working one of my server shifts (since I walk about 8000 steps each shift), walking the dogs for a minimum of 20 minutes or a simple workout of situps/pushups/ and planks.
Follow a Modified Whole 30 Meal plan.
I don’t want to do an entire Whole 30 again, but I would like to eliminate dairy, sugar, soda and limit alcohol to once a week. This seems like a reasonable plan to maintain for a lifetime.
Blogger Goal: Post twice each week in March.
I do generally post twice per week, but I have been a bit of a slacker lately. I would like to be inspired to do this in March. Starting today 🙂
Your encouragement, comments, and shares are so helpful for me. I really appreciate every single one of you!
What are your goals this month? This year? Even this week? Spring is just around the corner, let’s face it head on and tackle these goals!
