My family is filled with generations of Golden Gophers!
Rah Rah Rah! for Ski-U-Mah! Rah! Rah! Rah! Rah for the U of M!

Fall gets me feeling a bit nostalgic. Back to school, leaves turning and crunching under my boots, and college football games. Minnesota Gopher college football games.
Why Minnesota Gophers for me, you may wonder, and say Florida Gators or USC Trojans or even FGC Eagles for you? How exactly are these traditions started and passed down from generation to generation?
In my case, I attended the University of Minnesota. My husband, my dad, my bonus dad, my grandpa, and 2 of my sons have also attended. My grandma, my sister, and my aunt are all Gophers.
For generations of Golden Gophers,
the Maroon and Gold is just in our blood 🙂
My memories of our passion for the Golden Gophers date back to my childhood, somewhere in the 1970’s I’d guess. My dad had season tickets for both Gopher football and basketball games. When I was very young my sister and I would sometimes get bundled into our snowsuits, tucked into our hats, mittens, and scarves and go with Dad to the football games at the old Memorial Stadium in Minneapolis.Nothing like fall football in Minnesota! I got to bring my very own thermos of hot chocolate that I did not have to share with anyone! I remember how special that made me feel, that Dad took the extra time and care to make me my very own. Later I found it, it was really HIS cocoa that was the special one 🙂
We always got to bring the binoculars too, so we could look to see Grandma and Grandpa waving at us from across the field from their seats!
When I was in high school, my Dad became a University of Minnesota graduate and when it came time for me to choose a school, I couldn’t imagine going anywhere else.
The University is where I met Big Jon, where I joined a sorority (Pi Beta Phi if you are interested), studied, lived, learned and grew. While I was attending, my Grandpa was even a professor and I was able to visit him at his office at the dental school.
We even have our own word! Ski-U-Mah!
“This famous Minnesota phrase Ski-U-Mah (pronounced SKY-YOU-MAH) is more than 115 years old. In 1884, two Minnesota rugby players, John W. Adams and Win Sargent, tried to think of a fitting team yell. They used the word “Ski”, a Sioux battle cry meaning victory, and combined it with “U-Mah” (representing the University of Minnesota and rhyming with “rah-rah-rah”) to create a team cheer.”
The truth is, “Ski” is not actually a Sioux battle cry. The boys were mistaken. However, it makes for an awesome cheer!
And the tradition continues… Favorite First Born attended the University of Minnesota for his final 2 years of college. He hasn’t graduated yet – those pesky foreign language credits are hanging over him – but he will someday.
And now, Favorite Baby is fulfilling his lifelong dream as a Minnesota Gopher!
It’s funny how these things get passed down from generation to generation.
There are many, many exceptional colleges and universities available today. And there are many, many exceptional college and university football teams you may choose to root for.
As for me and my house, we choose the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers! It’s in our blood and I bet will continue to be for generations to come! This family chooses the University of Minnesota Gophers! Click To Tweet
